The 1914 Buffalo nickel, struck at the Denver Mint, is a remarkable example of early twentieth-century American coinage. This five-cent piece, graded in Fine condition, showcases a design that departs from traditional classical allegories to celebrate the rugged heritage of the American West. Sculpted by James Earle Fraser, the coin features two distinct and powerful subjects that capture a specific era of the nation's identity. On the obverse, a detailed profile of a Native American man faces right. The simple inscription "LIBERTY" is positioned along the upper right edge, while the year 1914 is clearly visible at the lower left. Fraser's design is celebrated for its realistic, textured depiction, which stands out even on coins that have seen circulation. The reverse of the coin is dedicated to a massive American bison, often referred to as a buffalo, standing on a raised mound of earth. The Denver Mint's "D" mint mark is located beneath the mound, indicating its origin. Surrounding the central figure are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "FIVE CENTS", along with the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" nestled above the animal's lower back.
