The 1914 San Francisco minted five dollar gold coin stands out as a remarkable example of American coinage, showcasing a distinctive incuse design where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This unusual sunken relief technique gives the coin a unique texture and depth. The obverse features a profile of a Native American wearing a traditional feathered headdress, surrounded by thirteen stars, the word LIBERTY, and the 1914 date. The designer's initials, B.L.P., are also visible on this side. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands leftward, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS. The traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST are carefully integrated into the field. Struck with a modest mintage of 263,000 pieces, this gold coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of actual gold content with a purity of 0.900. The small S mint mark on the reverse indicates its origin from the San Francisco minting facility, and this specific piece has survived in an impressive Almost Uncirculated condition.
