Struck in the early twentieth century, this Australian Half Sovereign represents a fascinating era of gold coinage. Minted in 1914 at the Sydney Mint, the coin is composed of 0.9167 fine gold, containing 0.1177 troy ounces of actual precious metal. With a total mintage of 322,000 pieces, this specific issue survived the decades in an Almost Uncirculated state, preserving the fine details of its classic artistry. The obverse of the coin features the left-facing portrait of King George V. Surrounding the royal likeness are partial inscriptions including GEORGIVS V D G BRITT OMN REX, marking his status as king. This side of the coin serves as a dignified historical portrait from the onset of the First World War. On the reverse, the coin displays one of the most famous motifs in numismatic history. Designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, the scene dynamically depicts Saint George on horseback, rearing back to slay a mythical dragon.
