1915 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle XF

0.1209 troy oz .900 1915 Extra Fine

The 1915 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating departure from traditional coin minting. Unlike standard coinage with raised features, this United States issue utilizes an incuse design, meaning the details are recessed directly into the flat surface of the coin. This unusual technique gives the piece a distinct, flat profile while protecting the intricate details of the artwork from heavy wear. On the obverse, the coin displays a realistic portrait of a Native American chief wearing a traditional feathered headdress. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the 1915 date. The reverse is dedicated to a majestic bald eagle standing proudly, surrounded by the country of origin, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination of 2 1/2 DOLLARS. The traditional mottos, E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, are also elegantly integrated into the field. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin has a purity of 0.900 gold, which equates to approximately 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this series was produced from 1908 to 1929, with this specific year having a recorded mintage of 606,000 pieces. This particular example survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the unique sunken relief that makes this era of American coinage so visually compelling.
