Unlike traditional coins with raised designs, this series features an innovative incuse design, where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin. On the obverse side, a portrait of Liberty is shown wearing a Native American war bonnet. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, alongside the word Liberty and the 1915 date. Because this piece was struck in Philadelphia, it does not bear a mint mark. The reverse side depicts a proud bald eagle perched in profile. Surrounding the national bird are the inscriptions United States of America, the motto E Pluribus Unum, and the five dollar denomination.
