Numismatic

1915 Austria Gold 4 Ducat (Scruffy)

0.4438 troy oz .986 1915 Cull

This impressive gold piece is a window into the final years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Struck in a remarkably high purity of 98.6 percent gold, this coin contains 0.4438 troy ounces of precious metal. Despite its significant gold weight, the coin is characterized by an unusually large 40 millimeter diameter, making it exceptionally thin and visually striking compared to other gold coinage of the era. The obverse displays a right-facing portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who ruled over the dual monarchy during its final decades. Surrounding his likeness is a traditional Latin inscription. The reverse of the coin features the highly detailed crowned coat of arms representing the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a double-headed eagle clutching the symbols of imperial power. While the Austrian Mint first introduced the 4 Ducat denomination back in the early part of the 17th century, the regular issues intended for general circulation ceased in 1914. This particular specimen bears the 1915 date, representing a continuation of this historic coinage tradition.
