In 1916, the United States Mint introduced a new design for its ten-cent piece, a coin that would become widely recognized as the Mercury Dime. This particular silver issue is a product of the Denver Mint, bearing the distinctive 'D' mint mark. With a composition of 90 percent silver, the coin contains approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features a winged depiction of Liberty, a design intended to symbolize freedom of thought. The words 'IN GOD WE TRUST' are struck alongside the 1916 date. On the reverse, the design showcases a fasces wrapped in an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace, surrounded by the inscriptions 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', 'E PLURIBUS UNUM', and the denomination 'ONE DIME'. This specific coin has been certified in Fine 12 condition. Out of the entire series, the Denver issue from this inaugural year is especially notable due to its incredibly low mintage of just 264,000 pieces, making it one of the most famous and sought-after issues in the history of American coinage.
