The year 1916 marked the debut of one of America's most celebrated coin designs. Struck at the Denver Mint, this Walking Liberty half dollar is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. With a total mintage of 1,014,400 pieces, this first-year issue represents a significant moment in United States coinage history. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin presents a powerful image of Lady Liberty moving gracefully toward the horizon and a rising sun. She cradles a bundle of branches in her arm, symbolizing peace and strength. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year "1916" are clearly integrated into this classic composition. On the reverse, a detailed eagle is depicted perched upon a rugged mountain crag, wings partially spread as if preparing to launch into flight. The traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is displayed alongside the denomination "HALF DOLLAR".
