In 1916, the Philadelphia Mint struck a distinctive gold coin to honor William McKinley, the nation's 25th president. This small gold dollar, containing 0.0483 troy ounces of pure gold in a 0.900 fine alloy, represents a fascinating moment in early twentieth-century American commemorative coinage. With a remarkably low mintage of just 9,977 pieces, this issue is a scarce survivor from the pre-1933 era of United States gold. The coin features a detailed portrait of McKinley on the obverse, while the reverse honors his memorial in Niles, Ohio, where he was born.
