In 1916, the United States Mint introduced a new ten-cent design that would become one of the most celebrated in American numismatics. Officially known as the Winged Liberty Head dime, this silver coin quickly earned its popular nickname, the Mercury Dime, because of the distinct headgear worn by the central figure. Crafted from 90 percent silver with a metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this piece represents the inaugural year of a legendary design series. The obverse of the coin features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This specific detail was intended to represent freedom of thought, though it led the public to mistake her for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. Surrounding this central portrait is the word LIBERTY, alongside the classic national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1916 date. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a powerful combination of symbols. A bundle of rods bound around an ax, known as a fasces, represents strength and unity, while an olive branch wrapped around it signals a desire for peace. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, and the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM encircle the reverse design, completing a coin that beautifully balances strength and diplomacy.
