The year 1916 marked the debut of a remarkably beautiful ten-cent piece, popularly known to generations of Americans as the Mercury Dime. Struck in 90 percent silver, this classic coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Despite its common nickname, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god, but rather a youthful personification of Liberty. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin shows Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. The legend 'IN GOD WE TRUST' is inscribed on the left, while the date 1916 is positioned at the bottom. This particular specimen is preserved in Very Fine condition, showing moderate wear but retaining clear details of the original artistry. The reverse of the coin presents a powerful combination of symbols, displaying a traditional Roman fasces alongside a leafy olive branch. The Latin motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' is clearly visible on the right side, completing a design that remains one of the most celebrated in the history of United States coinage.
