In 1916, the San Francisco mint struck a limited run of 138,500 gold ten-dollar pieces. This particular issue belongs to a larger series produced by the United States Mint between 1907 and 1933, which came from facilities in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. Composed of 90 percent pure gold, each coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of the precious metal. The design, created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, offers a striking departure from traditional American coinage. On the obverse, Lady Liberty is depicted wearing an Native American war bonnet. Her hair band displays the word LIBERTY, while thirteen stars arch above her and the 1916 date rests at the bottom. The reverse side presents a standing bald eagle. Surrounding the national bird are several inscriptions, including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TEN DOLLARS, and the traditional mottos E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. This specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of this historic twentieth-century gold piece.
