In 1916, the San Francisco Mint produced a limited run of 240,000 gold five dollar coins, marked with a small S on the reverse. This issue belongs to a distinctive series of American coinage characterized by an incuse design, where the details are recessed below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This innovative minting technique gives the coin a unique depth and texture. The front of the coin displays a profile of a Native American wearing a traditional feathered headdress. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the word Liberty placed along the upper rim and the 1916 date positioned at the bottom. Each coin contains 0.24194 troy ounces of pure gold, blending precious metal content with exceptional artistry. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands leftward, surrounded by the country's name, United States of America, and the face value, Five Dollars. The traditional mottos, E Pluribus Unum and In God We Trust, are also integrated into the field.
