1916-S Buffalo Nickel AU
The 1916 five-cent piece from the San Francisco Mint represents a classic era of American coinage design. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this coin departs from traditional neoclassical imagery to celebrate the heritage of the American West. The obverse presents a powerful, realistic portrait of a Native American chieftain in profile, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the date of production. On the reverse, a magnificent American bison stands on a raised mound of earth. This detailed rendering of the iconic animal is paired with the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination FIVE CENTS. Positioned just below the mound is the distinctive S mint mark, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility. This particular specimen survives in an impressive Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine textures of the native headdress and the bison's coat.
