1916-S Mercury Dime AU
The year 1916 marked the debut of a legendary American ten-cent piece, often called the Mercury Dime. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. It represents the very beginning of a beloved design series that circulated widely throughout the early twentieth century. On the obverse, the design features a youthful personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a detail that led many to mistake her for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. The legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed alongside the 1916 date. The reverse displays a fasces, an ancient symbol of authority, bound with an olive branch to represent peace. The traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is also clearly visible, alongside the "S" mint mark indicating its San Francisco origin.
