The year 1916 marked a major transition in United States coinage, introducing a fresh aesthetic that departed from nineteenth-century conventions. Among these new designs was a ten-cent silver piece that quickly captured the public imagination. Though officially representing Liberty in a winged cap, the coin became universally known as the Mercury Dime due to the likeness of the Roman messenger god. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its original striking at the San Francisco Mint. Created by sculptor Adolph Weinman, the obverse features a youthful profile of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. The legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" is positioned near the lower left, with the 1916 date anchored at the bottom. This inaugural year issue showcases the design exactly as it was intended to circulate, before decades of handling smoothed the delicate feathers of Liberty's cap. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a powerful combination of a fasces and an olive branch, representing both strength and peace. The Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is nestled in the right field, while the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DIME" frame the central design. Struck from 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this coin carries the "S" mint mark of the San Francisco facility, making it a fascinating artifact from the very beginning of a legendary American coin series.
