The year 1916 marked a major transformation for United States coinage, introducing a design that would become one of the nation's most celebrated. This ten-cent piece, struck in 90 percent silver at the San Francisco Mint, represents the very first year of the Mercury Dime series. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the coin is known for its elegant artistry and distinct symbolism. On the obverse, a youthful personification of Liberty wears a winged Phrygian cap. This choice of headwear led the public to mistake her for the Roman god Mercury, giving the coin its famous nickname. Surrounding the portrait are the words IN GOD WE TRUST and the date 1916. The reverse displays a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an axe, entwined with an olive branch. This powerful combination of symbols represents both strength and peace. The inscriptions read E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DIME, identifying its denomination. This particular coin survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of Weinman's original vision, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of silver.
