0.3575 troy oz .900 1916 Very Fine

The year 1916 marked the debut of one of America's most celebrated coin designs, the Walking Liberty half dollar. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this early issue represents the very beginning of a legendary series. Crafted from 90 percent silver, each coin contains approximately 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal and showcases the artistry of designer Adolph Weinman. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, preserving the bold details of its historic imagery through decades of existence. The obverse presents a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty draped in the American flag, striding gracefully toward a rising sun. In her arms, she cradles a bundle of oak and pine branches, symbolizing civil and military strength. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the inaugural year "1916" are clearly struck on this side, framing the active, forward-moving figure. On the reverse, a magnificent eagle stands poised on a rugged mountain crag. Its wings are unfurled, capturing a sense of power and readiness for flight. The traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is nestled alongside the eagle, while the denomination "HALF DOLLAR" anchors the bottom of the design. This combination of natural strength and patriotic symbolism makes the 1916-S half dollar a captivating piece of early twentieth-century American coinage.
