In 1916, the United States introduced a half dollar design that would become one of the most celebrated in American numismatic history. With a mintage of just 608,000 pieces, this first-year issue from the Philadelphia Mint represents the beginning of a legendary era in coinage. The obverse displays a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty walking toward a rising sun. She carries a bundle of branches, symbolizing strength and peace, while wrapped in the folds of the American flag. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1916" are clearly integrated into this graceful composition. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is perched upon a mountain crag, wings partially spread as if preparing to take flight. A pine sapling grows from the rock, representing renewal.
