The 1917 Buffalo nickel struck at the Denver Mint represents a classic era of United States coinage. This five-cent piece, preserved in Fine condition, showcases the distinct, textured artistry of sculptor James Earle Fraser. The metal composition is primarily copper, blended to withstand the rigors of daily commerce during the early twentieth century. On the obverse side, a powerful right-facing profile of a Native American dominates the design. The simple inscription "LIBERTY" is positioned along the upper right rim, with the year 1917 clearly visible at the base of the neck. The reverse features a massive American bison, modeled after a famous animal named Black Diamond. The bison stands on a raised mound of dirt, representing the western plains. The country of origin, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," arches across the top, accompanied by the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Below the mound, the denomination "FIVE CENTS" is accompanied by the "D" mint mark, indicating its origin from the Denver facility.
