In 1917, the Denver Mint produced a classic silver half dollar that remains a highlight of early twentieth-century American coinage. This particular issue features a total silver content of 0.3575 troy ounces, composed of 90 percent pure silver. With a total mintage of 765,400 pieces, this coin is a remarkable survivor from the second year of its series. The obverse of the coin displays a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty. She is shown draped in the folds of the American flag, moving gracefully toward a rising sun while cradling branches in her arm. This side of the coin bears the year 1917 and the sacred motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Notably, the "D" mint mark representing the Denver facility is located on this front side, a placement that was changed later in the production year. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is captured in a moment of anticipation, perched atop a rugged mountain crag with its wings slightly spread as if preparing to take flight. The traditional Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible alongside the denomination, HALF DOLLAR, and the country name, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This coin is preserved in Extra Fine condition, showcasing the intricate details of Adolph Weinman's celebrated design.
