Struck in the United States during a pivotal year in world history, this 10 Cents coin from 1917 is a beautiful example of early twentieth-century American coinage. Minted in Philadelphia, this silver piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Its preservation in Almost Uncirculated condition allows observers to appreciate the fine details of its artistry and the crispness of its original strike. The obverse of the coin presents a youthful portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design that famously earned the series its popular nickname, the Mercury Dime. Created by the artist Adolph Weinman, this depiction was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. Surrounding the profile are the words IN GOD WE TRUST and the date 1917. On the reverse, Weinman placed a traditional fasces entwined with an olive branch, representing both readiness for defense and a deep desire for peace.
