1917 Mercury Dime Good/VG
In 1917, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent piece that would become one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatic history. Commonly known as the Mercury Dime, this coin actually depicts a youthful personification of Liberty on its obverse. She wears a winged Phrygian cap, a symbol meant to represent freedom of thought. The legible inscriptions on this side include the word LIBERTY, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the 1917 date of manufacture. The reverse of the coin presents a powerful combination of symbols: a fasces, which is a bundle of rods bound around an ax, alongside an olive branch. These elements were chosen to signify both strength and peace. The Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination ONE DIME are also featured on this side. This particular coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal, and displays the honest wear of a piece graded in Good to Very Good condition.
