The 1917 Walking Liberty half dollar represents a fascinating moment in United States coinage. In the early part of this year, the San Francisco Mint placed its "S" mint mark on the front of the coin, right below the motto. This specific placement makes the coin highly distinctive, as the mint mark was moved to the reverse side later in the very same year. The obverse of this ninety percent silver coin depicts Lady Liberty walking gracefully toward a rising sun, cradling a bundle of branches in her arm. The words "IN GOD WE TRUST" are clearly visible on this side. On the reverse, a powerful eagle stands perched upon a rugged mountain crag, its wings partially spread as if preparing for flight.
