The 1918-D Buffalo Nickel stands as a classic representative of early twentieth century American coinage. Designed by the sculptor James Earle Fraser, this five cent piece departs from traditional classical allegories, opting instead for imagery deeply rooted in the American landscape and heritage. This particular coin, minted in Denver, bears the wear of time, graded in Almost Good condition, which tells a silent story of its long journey through daily commerce. On the obverse, a strong, composite profile of a Native American face looks toward the right. The simple inscription "LIBERTY" is positioned along the upper right edge. Fraser created this realistic portrait by combining the features of three different Native American models, resulting in an image that is both powerful and dignified. The reverse features a massive American bison, believed to be modeled after Black Diamond, a famous resident of the Central Park Zoo. The bison stands on a raised mound, with the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" positioned above it. Below the animal, the denomination "FIVE CENTS" is clearly visible, with the "D" mint mark of the Denver Mint nestled underneath, marking its origin.
