The 1918 five-cent piece struck at the Denver Mint represents a classic era of American coinage design. Created by sculptor James Earle Fraser, this issue features a striking profile of a Native American on the obverse, accompanied by the single word inscription, LIBERTY. The design captures a powerful portrait that has fascinated observers for generations. On the reverse, the coin depicts a massive American bison. This particular animal was modeled after Black Diamond, a famous resident of the Central Park Zoo. The bison is shown standing on a flat mound, with the traditional inscriptions FIVE CENTS and E PLURIBUS UNUM framing the scene. This specific coin has survived in Very Good condition, showing the honest wear of a piece that circulated widely during the early twentieth century.
