In 1918, the Denver Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains a captivating example of early twentieth-century American design. Struck in 90% silver with a precious metal content of 0.0723 troy ounces, this coin is popularly known as the Mercury Dime. Despite its common nickname, the obverse actually portrays a youthful personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. The legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the year "1918" are clearly visible on this side. The reverse of the coin presents a powerful combination of symbols: a bundle of rods bound around an ax, known as a fasces, alongside an olive branch. These elements represent strength, unity, and peace. The inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "ONE DIME" frame the central design, accompanied by the distinctive "D" mint mark indicating its origin in Denver. On examples of this age, the outer rims may display minor indications of wear, reflecting their journey through circulation.
