Struck at the Denver Mint during a pivotal year in global history, this 1918 Mercury Dime represents a classic era of United States coinage. Crafted from 90% silver, the ten-cent piece contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Despite its popular nickname, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god Mercury, but rather a unique American representation of freedom. The obverse design, created by sculptor Adolph Weinman, features a youthful personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This distinctive headgear was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. On the reverse, Weinman placed a fasces, an ancient symbol of authority and strength, bound alongside an olive branch to represent a desire for peace.
