Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This distinct headgear often led the public to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god Mercury, giving the series its popular nickname. The obverse also displays the year 1918 and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." On the reverse, the design showcases a fasces paired with an olive branch, symbolizing strength and peace. The inscriptions on this side include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DIME," and the Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
