Struck at the Denver Mint during a pivotal year in global history, this 1918 silver half dollar showcases a design that remains a high point of American coinage. Composed of 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.3575 troy ounces, the coin represents the early years of the Walking Liberty series, which began just two years prior in 1916. The obverse displays a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty moving gracefully toward a rising sun, her figure draped in the folds of the American flag. In her arms, she cradles a bundle of oak and pine branches, symbolizing both civil and military strength. The inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date "1918" are clearly integrated into this iconic composition, which was created by sculptor Adolph Weinman. On the reverse, a majestic eagle is shown perched upon a rugged mountain crag, its wings partially unfurled as if preparing for flight. A small pine sapling grows from the rock, adding a touch of natural realism to the scene. The reverse also bears the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" alongside the denomination "HALF DOLLAR" and the country name.
