1918 Mercury Dime Fine

The 10 cent piece from 1918 represents a classic era of United States coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver, this dime contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Despite its common nickname, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god Mercury. Instead, the design represents a youthful personification of Liberty. On the obverse, Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This specific imagery was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. The legend includes the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST", alongside the 1918 date. This particular specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation. The reverse of the coin presents a powerful combination of symbols. A traditional Roman fasces, which is a bundle of rods bound around an axe, is wrapped with an olive branch. This juxtaposition represents both readiness for defense and a desire for peace. The Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is also visible on this side, completing a design that remains one of the most celebrated in American numismatic history.
