1918 Mercury Dime Good/VG
The 1918 ten-cent piece is a fascinating window into United States coinage from the era before 1933. Struck in 90% silver, this dime contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Because of its time in circulation, the outer borders of the coin may exhibit noticeable wear, reflecting its long journey through American commerce. On the obverse, the design presents a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This distinct headwear often led the public to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god, giving the series its popular nickname. Legible inscriptions on this side include the date 1918 and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse of the coin displays a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an axe, positioned alongside a leafy olive branch. The Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed nearby, surrounded by the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This intricate artwork was created by the designer Adolph Weinman, whose vision remains highly celebrated by numismatists today.
