1918 Mercury Dime XF
In 1918, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent silver piece that would become one of the most recognized designs in American coinage. Commonly known as the Mercury Dime, this coin actually depicts a youthful personification of Liberty on its obverse. She wears a winged Phrygian cap, a choice intended to symbolize freedom of thought. The front of the coin also displays the year 1918 and the classic national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The reverse side of this ninety percent silver coin presents a powerful combination of symbols: a fasces, representing strength and unity, entwined with an olive branch, symbolizing peace. Surrounding these central images are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DIME," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM." This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of Adolph Weinman's iconic design.
