Struck during a pivotal year in global history, the 1918 Mercury dime from the San Francisco Mint represents a classic era of American coinage. This ten-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. Preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, it offers a remarkably clear look at a design that has captivated observers for generations. The obverse of the coin features a youthful depiction of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a detail intended by designer Adolph Weinman to represent freedom of thought. This distinctive headwear led to the popular, though technically incorrect, nickname of the Mercury dime, as the public associated the wings with the Roman messenger god. The inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the 1918 date accompany this central portrait. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, which is closely intertwined with an olive branch. This imagery contrasts the strength of unity and preparedness with a deep desire for peace. The words "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the denomination "ONE DIME" are clearly inscribed on this side, completing a harmonious and symbolic piece of United States numismatic history.
