The 1919 five-cent piece stands as a classic example of United States coinage from the era before 1933. This particular coin, preserved in Very Fine condition, showcases the rugged artistry of sculptor James Earle Fraser. His design departs from traditional neoclassical figures, opting instead for a powerful representation of early American identity. On the obverse, a detailed profile of an American Indian faces right, accompanied by the simple inscription of the word LIBERTY. The reverse features a massive American bison standing atop a raised mound of dirt. Surrounding this central figure are the traditional inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination of FIVE CENTS. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this 1919 issue does not display a mint mark, which is characteristic of coins produced at the main facility during this period.
