0.0715 troy oz .900 1920 Very Fine

The 1920-D Mercury Dime stands as a classic example of United States coinage from the early twentieth century. Struck at the Denver Mint, this ten-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. This specimen is preserved in Very Fine condition, showing the moderate wear typical of a coin that circulated during a vibrant era of American history. Designed by the artist Adolph Weinman, the coin features a striking obverse portrait of a youthful Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a detail intended to represent freedom of thought. This distinctive headgear led to the popular, though technically inaccurate, nickname of the Mercury Dime, as the public associated the wings with the Roman messenger god. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1920 year of issue. The reverse design presents a powerful contrast of symbols, pairing a fasces with a leafy olive branch. This combination represents the dual concepts of national strength and a desire for peace. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination ONE DIME border the design, accompanied by the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. A small D mint mark indicates its origin at the Denver facility, making this a fascinating piece of American numismatic artistry to study and appreciate.
