Struck at the Denver Mint over a century ago, this 1920 silver dime represents a classic era of American coinage. Composed of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Its enduring appeal lies in its elegant, detailed imagery, which has made the series a favorite among numismatic enthusiasts. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the ten-cent piece showcases a youthful depiction of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a feature intended to symbolize freedom of thought. This distinctive headgear led to the popular, though technically inaccurate, nickname of the Mercury Dime, as the wings resembled those of the Roman messenger god. The reverse of the coin presents a contrasting blend of themes, displaying a traditional Roman fasces alongside a leafy olive branch. These symbols were chosen to represent both readiness for defense and a deep desire for peace. The inscriptions on the coin include the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," on the obverse, and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" alongside "ONE DIME" on the reverse, framing a design that remains a high point of early twentieth-century artistic expression.
