In 1920, the United States Mint commemorated a century of statehood for Maine with a specially designed silver half dollar. Maine officially entered the Union as the twenty-third state on March 15, 1820. This coin, struck in 90% fine silver with an actual silver content of 0.3617 troy ounces, represents a historic milestone. A total of 50,028 of these pieces were minted, with this specific specimen preserved in an exceptional certified grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65). The obverse of the coin showcases the detailed state seal of Maine. At the center of the design is a shield depicting a moose resting beneath a pine tree. Supporting the shield on either side are two figures representing the state's traditional industries: a farmer and a sailor. The reverse shifts focus to a simpler botanical tribute, featuring a pine cone wreath that frames the central inscriptions. Legible inscriptions on the coin highlight its commemorative purpose and national origin. The reverse displays the words "MAINE CENTENNIAL" alongside the dual dates "1820-1920". Traditional national mottos, including "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "LIBERTY", are integrated into the design, alongside the denomination "HALF DOLLAR" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA".
