1921/11 Mexico Gold 20 Pesos AU
This Mexican gold coin, minted with a face value of 20 Pesos, holds a captivating secret for those who look closely at its date. Struck from 0.4823 troy ounces of gold, this particular piece represents one of only two overdate varieties known in the entire 20 Peso series. A close inspection reveals a 1921 over 11 overdate, a numismatic anomaly that occurred because a minting die from a decade prior was reused. The obverse of the coin displays the traditional Mexican coat of arms, which depicts a powerful eagle perched upon a cactus while gripping a snake. Directly below the eagle's wing, the dual date is visible. The surrounding inscription reads ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS, representing the United States of Mexico. On the reverse, the design showcases the incredibly detailed Aztec Calendar Stone, a symbol of ancient Mesoamerican culture. This side also features legends indicating the denomination and the metal content, declaring the purity of the gold. This specimen is preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, offering a wonderful glimpse into the artistry of early twentieth-century Mexican coinage.
