The year 1921 marked a fascinating final chapter for a classic American silver coin. Following the passage of the Pittman Act in 1918, which required the melting of hundreds of millions of silver dollars, the United States resumed minting this iconic design. Because the original engraving hubs had been destroyed years prior, new tooling was created to revive the coin, resulting in a slightly shallower relief on these late issues compared to their predecessors. This specific coin represents a major milestone as the only issue in the entire series to be struck at the Denver Mint. With a mintage of 20,345,000, these pieces carry the 'D' mintmark, distinguishing them from all other years of production. The coin is composed of 90 percent fine silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, with a diameter of 38.1 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with a laurel wreath and a star, surrounded by the Latin motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' and the date '1921'. On the reverse, an eagle with spread wings holds arrows and an olive branch, framed by a partial wreath. The inscriptions read 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'ONE DOLLAR'. This certified specimen is graded Mint State 64, preserving the distinct details of this singular Denver issue.
