1921 Mercury Dime Fair

1921 Mercury Dime Fair
The year 1921 stands out as a remarkably scarce date in the history of the United States ten-cent piece. With a total production of just 1,230,000 pieces from the Philadelphia Mint, these coins are highly sought after by curious observers. This particular specimen survives in Fair condition, showing the heavy wear and honest circulation of a coin that spent decades traveling through American pockets and cash registers. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin displays a youthful profile of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a symbol traditionally associated with freedom of thought. The design was so distinctive that the public quickly dubbed it the Mercury dime, mistaking the winged cap for the helmet of the Roman messenger god. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, representing strength and unity, alongside an olive branch to symbolize peace. Struck in 90% fine silver, this dime contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Although worn down by time, the faint outlines of the original artistry and the classic inscriptions, including the national motto and the year 1921, remain as a tangible connection to the early decades of the twentieth century.
