The 10 cent piece from 1921 represents a remarkably scarce moment in United States coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this silver dime emerged from a very limited production run of just 1,230,000 pieces. Finding one today in Very Good condition offers a tangible connection to the early twenties, showcasing a design that has captivated observers for generations. Created by the artist Adolph Weinman, the obverse of the coin presents a youthful personification of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap adorned with wings, a detail intended to represent freedom of thought. This distinctive headwear led the public to mistake Liberty for the Roman messenger god, giving the series its popular nickname, the Mercury Dime. The front also bears the date 1921 and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, the design shifts to a powerful combination of symbols. A bundle of rods bound around an ax, known as a fasces, represents strength and unity, while an olive branch wrapped around it signals a desire for peace. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the denomination expressed as ONE DIME. Composed of 90 percent silver, each coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal.
