Struck in 1921, this magnificent gold coin represents the debut of a legendary series from the Banco de México. Containing 1.2057 troy ounces of pure gold in a 0.900 fine alloy, this 50 Pesos issue holds the distinction of being the largest bullion coin produced by Mexico. The series, which ran from 1921 to 1947, was initially created to mark the centennial of Mexico's independence from Spain. The obverse of the coin displays the traditional Mexican national coat of arms. A powerful golden eagle is perched atop a flowering cactus, gripping a snake firmly in its beak. This ancient symbol of Mexican heritage is surrounded by the inscription "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS," signifying the United States of Mexico. On the reverse, the breathtaking figure of Winged Victory, often called "The Angel of Independence," stands tall against a backdrop of Mexican volcanos. She holds a laurel wreath in her outstretched right hand and broken chains in her left, symbolizing freedom. The reverse also displays the face value "50 PESOS," the year of issue "1921," and the gold weight in the inscription "37.5 Gr. ORO PURO," indicating thirty-seven and a half grams of pure gold.
