In 1921, the United States introduced a new silver dollar design that captured a national mood of hope. This inaugural issue of the Peace Dollar series stands out because it represents the only year the coin was struck in high relief for general circulation. The deeper, more dramatic details of the high-relief strike give the coin a sculptural quality that was never repeated for circulating issues in the years that followed. The obverse of this ninety percent silver coin presents a profile of Lady Liberty. Her hair is swept back as if in a gentle breeze, and she wears a crown of sharp, radiating light beams. The legend accompanying her profile reads IN GOD WE TRUST, rendered with a classic V in place of the U. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle is perched upon a mountain crag, clutching an olive branch as a symbol of harmony. The word PEACE is inscribed directly beneath the eagle, anchoring the coin's message.
