1921-S Morgan Dollar MS-66 PCGS

0.7734 troy oz .900 1921 MS-66 (PCGS)

The 1921-S Morgan Dollar represents a fascinating moment of transition in United States coinage. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this issue marked both the unexpected return and the final farewell of the beloved Morgan design. Following the passage of the Pittman Act, which required the melting of millions of silver dollars, the series was revived for one last year. Because the original hubs had been destroyed years prior, entirely new master dies had to be engraved for the 1921 production, giving these final-year coins a slightly different aesthetic character than their predecessors. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, which is decorated with cotton and wheat. On the reverse, an eagle with spread wings holds an olive branch and three arrows, symbolizing peace and readiness. This specific coin has been certified in Mint State 66 (MS-66), preserving the sharp details of George T. Morgan's classic design. It is struck in 0.900 fine silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver, with a diameter of 38.10 mm and a thickness of 3.1 mm. With a mintage of 21,695,000, the 1921-S is an essential part of the silver dollar story. It served as a bridge between two eras, circulating briefly before the Peace Dollar was introduced later that same year to celebrate the end of World War I.
