In the wake of the First World War, the United States Mint sought a new design to symbolize a fresh era of global harmony. The result was the Peace silver dollar, a coin born from an artistic competition. Anthony de Francisci created the winning design, which was struck from 1921 to 1928, and then revived briefly for the years 1934 and 1935. This historic issue holds the distinction of being the final silver dollar ever struck for actual circulation in the United States. The obverse of the coin presents a left-facing profile of Liberty, adorned with a crown of sharp, radiating light beams. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted resting on a rocky perch, holding an olive branch in its talons. This imagery was specifically chosen to represent the peace achieved after the devastation of World War I. Minted with a composition of 90 percent silver, each coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal.
