1923-D $20 St Gaudens Gold Double Eagle MS-65 NGC

0.9675 troy oz .900 1923 MS-65 (NGC)

In 1923, the Denver Mint struck this magnificent twenty-dollar gold coin, a piece that represents the height of United States coinage design. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this specimen has survived the decades in exceptional condition, earning a high certified grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65). The obverse of the coin presents a striking image of Lady Liberty in stride, holding aloft a flaming torch to light the way forward while clasping an olive branch. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle is captured mid-flight, soaring across the design. The reverse also bears the bold inscriptions indicating the nation of origin, 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', and the denomination, 'TWENTY DOLLARS'. This specific design series, created by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was produced by the United States Mint from 1907 to 1933. While these historic gold coins were struck at several facilities over the years, including Philadelphia and San Francisco, this particular coin features the 'D' mint mark, identifying its origin from the Denver facility during the pre-1933 era of American currency.
