1923 Mercury Dime XF
Struck in 1923 at the Philadelphia Mint, this ten-cent silver piece is a beautiful survivor from the era before 1933. Minted with a silver purity of 90 percent, the coin contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a classic era of American coinage design, surviving today in a well-preserved Extra Fine state. The obverse of the coin features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design element that famously led the public to mistake her for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. Alongside this portrait, the words IN GOD WE TRUST and the year 1923 are clearly visible. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, an ancient symbol of authority and strength, intertwined with an olive branch representing peace. This combination of strength and peace captures the spirit of the era. Designed by Adolph Weinman, this dime remains one of the most celebrated and recognizable designs in United States numismatic history.
