The 1924 Buffalo nickel, struck at the Denver Mint, stands as a classic representative of early twentieth-century American coinage. This five-cent piece, preserved in Very Fine condition, showcases the bold, sculptural designs of James Earle Fraser. Unlike traditional classical motifs, this coin celebrates the raw, natural heritage of the American West. The obverse presents a powerful, textured profile of a Native American, facing right. The simple inscription LIBERTY is placed along the upper right edge, with the year 1924 clearly visible at the base of the neck. Fraser created this composite portrait to capture the dignity and strength of the continent's original inhabitants. On the reverse, a massive American bison, modeled after a famous animal named Black Diamond, stands atop a raised mound of earth. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM curve gracefully above the animal, while the denomination FIVE CENTS is positioned below the mound. Just beneath the value, the D mint mark indicates this coin was struck at the Denver facility.
