Struck in the post-World War I era, this 1924 ten-cent silver coin from the San Francisco Mint represents a fascinating period in United States coinage. Known widely as the Mercury Dime, the coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. Because this specimen has circulated, the outer rim may exhibit some natural signs of wear, adding to its authentic character. The obverse of the coin presents a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This distinct headgear often led observers to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god, Mercury, giving the series its popular nickname. Legible inscriptions on this side include the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the 1924 date of manufacture. On the reverse, the imagery shifts to a fasces, which is a bound bundle of wooden rods surrounding an axe with its blade visible. This central symbol is paired with an olive branch, representing a balance of strength and peace.
